Statement of Need for a New Library

Because:

§Our library today provides many new community services not envisioned when it was built (1905) or last remodeled (1984).

§Our staff has grown considerably. Our staff work areas were always very limited and have not grown with the library.

§New technologies of the modern library warrant new computer/technical areas to provide for privacy, staff work areas, et c.

§New technologies required technical devices at the point of need, especially where our staff is at work: front desk, reference area, book processing. These areas have extreme limitations within our current library.

§There has always been a need for more storage/work space and meeting/class rooms. This need has only become more critical in recent years.

§We need separate areas for kids and young adults to allow them to be comfortable and thus be users of all the library has to offer in the way of education, quality peer interaction (interaction with good quality peers), and lifelong library reading habits.

§Our senior population is growing and their special needs and desires (large print, quiet areas, social interaction) would better be addressed in a larger facility.

§A community center approach would bring complementary services together for more efficient usage of assets.

§A community center approach would enable impulsive use by people who are not regular library users.
